New Cascadia Tradtional Sourdough Bread

My husband and I have temporarily relocated to Vancouver, WA while we help to care for my sister as she recovers from that terrible car accident of last month. She is in a halo through mid-January and I’m the general on-hand person for baking, cleaning, feeding, and assisting her with everyday life.

Prior to this, we were in Seattle since October 18. A definite delight what with all the gluten-free restaurants and goods available. Far more than what I can find in Port Angeles!

With the move to Vancouver, I had no worries. Vancouver and the Portland, OR area are very gluten-free friendly and mere hours after our arrival here, I’d discovered the New Cascadia Traditional – Gluten Free Artisans Bakery. So first thing this morning, Joe was up and out the door to make the 20 mile drive to gather some gluten-free yummies for me.

As this was my first experience with New Cascadia, I opted to try just 3 different items. A Sweet Galette, Cinnamon Roll, and a loaf of Sourdough Bread. The Galette and Cinnamon Roll were among the best pastries I’ve had in quite some time. Once heated in the microwave, soft and full of flavor.

But the Sourdough Bread? That was sheer heaven. It actually looked like a “real” loaf of artisan bread. Delightfully crusty on the outside and nice and soft on the inside. Soft with a mouth-watering sour bite that fills your senses and evokes thoughts of my past. San Francisco Sourdough. Seattle Sourdough. Sourdough period.

With my first few slices, I make the best french toast I’ve had in my nearly 7 years of gluten-free living. And I’m about ready to cut a few more slices to pair with my tomato basil soup for dinner. Heaven.

I will definitely be sending Joe on a weekly NCT run for this bread. Now that I’ve had it, going back home in January will be next to impossible. It is so nice to have a gluten-free bakery in such close proximity.

If you’re in the area, New Cascadia Traditional is a must-stop. I’m sure everything they make it just as fabulous as the three items I was able to enjoy today.

Very glad your sister is on the mend! I live in Portland, so finding out about New Cascadia is a godsend! I can’t even remember if I ever searched for GF dedicated bakeries since my diagnosis in February, but since it’s new I don’t feel too bad for being out of the loop. Bonus is that a lot of their products are also vegan, so I don’t have to worry about my dairy and egg allergies; they also say they don’t use soy flour! Being allergic to all four categories (G,D,S,E) is a total pain and I really hate baking. Thanks!!!
